Henceforth only smart meters will be used in electricity connections in houses across Tamil Nadu. Already more than 40 thousand of these smart meters are in use in Chennai. Presently, Tamil Nadu government is planning to install smart meters across Tamil Nadu.
This smart meter can accurately
calculate the electricity usage and the corresponding charge. Hence the
electricity bill will be accurate from now on. After the arrival of this smart
meter, there is no need for electricity workers to come to the house and
measure the electricity consumption and electricity bill.
This smart meter will send the
electricity usage and charges to our mobile phone as a text message every
month. If the electricity bill is not paid first, an employee from the
electricity board will come and disconnect the electricity.
Henceforth, electricity connection
will be automatically disconnected if electricity bill is not paid on time. So
it is mandatory to pay electricity bill on time. This new smart meter is
provided free of cost to households.
WHAT IS THE TECHNOLOGY
BEHIND THE SMART METER
This smart meter measures the
power consumption every 30 minutes. We may have a doubt that how the smart
meter communicates with the utility server. This smart meter shares its data
with the Wide Area Network (WAN) about electricity usage and charges through a
network called HAN (Home Area Network). It sends the electricity bill to the
electricity board's server. From there we will receive text message but for
this we do not need any network connection or WIFI connection, the network
available in the smart meter called home area network will be sufficient.
